22.01.16 New Theme For Year 1

Our theme this term is Môr a Mynydd (the sea and the mountain). During this first half term we will be concentrating on the sea. The children are enjoying our first story, Morfil y Storm by Benji Davies (The storm whale) – a story about a young boy called Noi who lives by the sea with his dad and six cats. We will be hearing more stories e.e Grace Darling; Jesus calming the storm. We will be comparing our experiences at the seaside with a Sunday school trip in the olden days. We will be studying creatures that live in the sea.

The Winter
This term we have been learning about the Winter. We concentrated on the birds that visit our gardens. Each child prepared food for the birds and it was hung in our school garden. Mr Duncan Brown visited to share his great knowledge of different birds.
We have been studying The slightly annoying elephant by David Walliams. Everybody enjoyed hearing about the elephant’s antics. On World Book Day, everybody dressed as a character from the book. We had an enjoyable day topped off by Brynrefail pupils visiting and reading their stories. As a result of the elephant stealing Sam’s bike, Year 2 participated in bicycle activities on the yard arranged by Gwen from Sustrans. Anest Haf was the lucky winner of the golden padlock.

St Davids Day
On St Davids Day there was an abundance of red, white and green to celebrate our patron saint.
During our last week of term, we are learning about Easter and it’s traditions.

Môr a Mynydd
Our theme this term is Môr a Mynydd where we will be learning about our local area. During the first half term all our will derive from the Woolly Wendy story. We will be visiting Llanberis where we will be looking at different features such as the castle, lake, waterfall and museum. The children will practise different forms of writing e.g countryside rules, writing a diary and postcard. After half term we will move on to learn about the sea.

16.10.15 Christening Ceremony

As part of our theme we’ve been learning about the christening ceremony and went to Capel y Rhos. We received a warm welcome from the minister Mr Marcus Robinson and he performed a christening service for us. On our return to school from the children’s work it was obvious our visit had inspired them.

15.10.15 Shwmae, Su’mae Day

Thursday, October 15th, we celebrated the Shwmae, su’mae day with the whole school singing Karaoke in the hall. Mrs Evans’s Class sang ‘Tŷ ar y Mynydd’; Mrs Jenkins’s class sang ‘Yma o Hyd’ and Miss Jones’s class sang ‘Un Funud Bach’. The hall was full of excitement when Elin Fflur came to film the occasion for the Heno programme on S4C. All the school children performed exceptionally well.

21.09.15 Everyone has settled well

The first fortnight has flown by and the children have settled very well. We are all enjoying our Happiness thme. After reading Angharad Tomos’ story Penbwl Hapus, the children have learnt the names of five different tress – holly, hazel, oak, ash and sycamore. As we are entering the Autumn it is an ideal opportunity to learn and recognise these leaves. How about drawing your childs’ attention to these leaves whilst going for a walk? Maybe they could bring some leaves for our display. Next week we intend to go for a walk to see signs o fthe Autumn. A text will follow to remind your child to bring wellies.

plant18.05.15

We are busy observing our sunflowers and after measuring we record in our diaries. We will be moving on to look at plant growth in other areas of the world namely Rainforests.

We will concentrate for the next three weeks on rainforests. Our areas within the classrooms will change to reflect our studies. We wonder which animals we will find. If you have any information / books / pictures etc we would be very grateful.

11.05.15
We have been for a nature walk to search for signs of spring. We painted flowerpots and then planted sunflower seeds. We eagerly look forward to seeing them grow. We have been writing about spring – Year 1 wrote a verse and Year 2 wrote a description. Following the planting of the sunflower seeds we have been recreating Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflower painting. We have a number of budding artists in our midst!! We have listened to a story by Emily Huws caleed Blodyn yr Haul and our activities are based on the story.
