Literacy and Numeracy Framework

Primarily, the LNF is a curriculum planning tool that assists teachers to incorporate literacy and numeracy in curriculum teaching.

Our objective is to assist teachers to recognize that they have an important role in developing their learners literacy and numeracy skills.
Currently, every school has curriculum planning arrangements and these will require adjustment to support cross-curricular planning using the LNF. Although we recognize that developing skills for junior learners, in particular, can be more inconsistent, effective cross-curriculum planning for skills and framework for continuous development is important for all learners.

The LNF’s Key Aims are to

  • assist teachers in all subjects to identify and provide opportunities for learners to apply cross curricular literacy and numeracy, and is divided into year groups
  • accurately describe the annual national expectations for literacy and numeracy for 5-14 year old learners, and follow-up indicators for learners who have additional learning needs
  • help to assess learners progress in literacy and numeracy and prepare annual reports for parents/guardians that are based on teachers assessments so that teachers, learners and parents/guardians obtain clarity on how learners develop and their next steps.
