Gwynedd Primary Schools Language Charter

Since the launch of the Welsh Language Charter in Gwynedd schools, a great deal of work has taken place at our school that has an impact on the children’s use of Welsh socially.

In simple terms, the Language Charter’s objective is to lead to an increase in children’s social use of Welsh. In a word, get the children to speak Welsh.
The Language Charter asks for a contribution from every member of the school community - the school council, the pupils, the workforce, parents, governors and the wider community so as ensure complete ownership.

An implementation programme has been drawn up that every school has to pass. Last year, we worked towards achieving the first level, the Bronze Award. This year, we are working towards achieving the Silver award.
All schools have to do several things to achieve the awards. One of them is to complete a questionnaire every term recording pupils social use of Welsh in school in the classroom, on the playground and within the community. The children also have an opportunity to note how comfortable they are when working, how confident they are when speaking Welsh and how important Welsh is to them. All pupils note their answers on a scale from nought to ten. Answers will be converted into data and then the data will create a baseline for our school to prepare future targets. Much evidence is also gathered from various activities that are held at the school to promote the Welsh language. See class photos.

We recognize that the village of Llanrug is very Welsh in nature and that most of the children speak Welsh. All of us have to play our part to ensure that this continues.

If you have ideas or are willing to assist, come to talk with us at the school.

Thank you
Mrs Llinos Evans

November 2016
The school has successfully achieved the gold award. Thank you for all your hard work at home as well.
Remember that many Welsh programmes can be viewed on the S4C web site at any time. It contains programmes for all age-groups. We have listened to a great deal of Welsh music in the classes and in the hall. A great deal of music is available over the internet. We continue to try and increase pupil numbers who watch Welsh programmes and listen to Welsh music during next year. Thanks for your co-operation.

Summer Fair Stall 11/6/16
The school council pupils were busy with a stall at the Summer Fair getting people to guess what the red dragon’s name was. The children also disseminated pamphlets about the Language Charter and spoke to parents and the village residents about its importance. Mared won the dragon called Dafydd!
