What is the Urdd?

Urdd Gobaith Cymru is an exciting and dynamic organization run for children and young people. It provides a range of activities throughout Wales. Development officers work in every area to ensure that children and young people receive a full programme of activities.

  • The Urdd was established in 1922 to provide an opportunity for children and young people to learn and to socialize through the medium of Welsh.
  • It provides an opportunity for young people in Wales to live busy lives through the medium of Welsh, learning self-respect and respect towards the peoples of the world.
  • Both Welsh speakers and learners are welcome.

Who are Urdd members?

  • 50,000 children and young people in Wales are Urdd members.
  • A third of all Welsh speakers between 8 and 18 years are members.
  • 30% of all the members say that they are learners.
  • Over 3,000 of the members are between 16 and 25 years old.
  • Familiar names who have been Urdd members are Huw Edwards, the news reader, Bryn Terfel, the world renowned singer, and Glyn Wise from the Big Brother series!
  • The organization has 10,000 volunteers that are extremely hard and work in 900 branches throughout the country.


What has the Urdd got to offer you...?
    

  • A team of staff supervise 300 community branches and aelwydydd.
  • Weekly clubs, competitions, sports, overseas trips and trips to the camps are held.
  • All types of activities ranging from sailing, canoeing and climbing at Glanllyn, to go-karting, sking and pony-trekking at Llangrannog, or a visit to the Millenium Stadium or the theatre in Cardiff.
  • Something to everybody’s taste!
  • Rugby, swimming, football, gymnastics, athletics... the choice is endless!
  • An opportunity to compete against children and young people throughout the length and breadth of Wales
  • Weekly clubs and sports courses
  • This is Europe’s greatest competitive festival for young people
  • Singing, dancing, acting, performance, art and craft, poetry writing competitions
  • 15,000 annually compete at the Urdd National Eisteddfod.
  • How about reading the interesting stories or have a go at competitions that appear in Cip, iaw! and Bore Da?
  • There are magazines for Welsh learners and Welsh Speakers
  • 10,000 magazines reach the schools and homes of children in Wales every month.
  • The Urdd has announced the Peace and Children of Wales Good Will message to the World since 1925.
  • How about going overseas with the Urdd to do voluntary work?
  • Discover new cultures and meet children and other people from countries across the world.
