Sustrans School

We have been fortunate enough to be selected as a Sustrans School. This is a scheme that promotes healthy travel in any way. It has never been so important to encourage healthy and energetic travel. Only a third of young people do 60 minutes of daily recommended physical activity. The area space around their homes where they travel, play or socialize has substantially reduced in a generation. The cost of lack of exercise to the health service and our economy is enormous but the cost to our young people’s well-being is even higher.

Fortunately, schools are in an ideal position to change things. Practices, skills and confidence developed at a young age can influence how people travel throughout their lifetime. Young people love being physically active, and when their whole peer group join in in an activity that can be repeated day after day – such as the journey to school – it becomes the norm.

Through involving pupils, their families, staff and the community, hopefully we go contrary to the national pattern and that the children will make healthy choices regarding travel options.

It is a flexible aim to allow schools to focus on one or more methods of travel e.g. walking, riding a scooter and cycling. There are three levels, bronze, silver and gold and we hope to achieve the gold award within three years.
As part of the scheme, we will be holding activities within the school and will inform parents of these.

Big Pedal

The entire school have participated in this national competition. A group from year 6 gathered information daily and fed it into the computer. The school was unsuccessful on this occasion but the percentage of children who travelled to school in an energetic manner substantially increased during the fortnight. All who participated in the scheme received an award and pupils who came to school continuously for the fortnight received an additional prize.

Walking to School

plantAs part of Gwynedd Council Walking to School scheme, the pupils tried to walk to school everyday for a week. At the beginning of the week, 83 pupils had walked energetically but by Friday the number stood at 187. Everybody enjoyed the opportunity especially as they listened for different sounds and scenery when travelling.

Summer Fair

plantThe Summer Fair was held recently and some year 6 pupils were busy promoting active travel. The pupils devised scooter games and shared information.

Creating Safe Pathways

plantAs part of the scheme, Gwen Thomas from Sustrans came to assist the pupils to create safe cycle paths. The pupils were busy using maps and excellent work was produced. Cllr Charles Wyn Jones attended the session and he highly rated the pupils ideas on how to improve active travel in Llanrug.
